First operating in 2004, the S-92 is a new aircraft built by Sikorsky to compete in the utility helicopter market. The military variant of the helicopter, the H-92, is currently competing for a U.S. Air Force search and rescue contract, as well as for Norwegian and English selections for the same role. The American Federal Aviation Administration called the S-92 the "safest helicopter in the world" when it reviewed the aircraft for safety requirements.
