The SBD Dauntless, built by Douglas, is one of the most famous American naval aircraft in WWII. Involved in combat from the very first day of American fighting to the very last, the Dauntless was used on countless American sorties and air raids, starting with a group of Dauntless bombers accidentally caught in the air over Hawaii during the Pearl Harbor raid. A U.S. Army version of the SBD, known as the A-24, was used valiantly and capably in the eventually fruitless defenses of American bases in the Pacific, but the airplane soon got its revenge, sinking more tonnage of enemy ships than any other Allied aircraft operating in the Pacific. The Dauntless was even used as a combat fighter on occasion, and was sufficient at the role to maintain a positive kill-loss ratio throughout the war.
This historic aircraft is rendered here in a carefully handcrafted model with a finely detailed U.S. Army Air Corps blue finish that will make it a centerpiece model in any collection.
