While its development began early in the Second World War, Lockheed's P-2 Neptune wasn't introduced into service until 1947, mostly due to low funding priority. Designed to be a patrol aircraft that was both easy to build and maintain, the Neptune has seen worldwide success in a variety of roles, a number of which were never intended by the original designers. The P-2 was involved in the Vietnam conflict as an American gunship and patrol plane, and it saw combat with the Argentine Navy in a number of conflicts, including the Falklands War. Despite excellent performance and endurance, the P-2 was eventually replaced in military service by larger aircraft, the last retiring from Japanese service in 1984. However, the Neptune still sees use as a civilian-operated aerial firefighter in several organizations.
Reproduced here is a P2V-7 Neptune, the last major American production variant. Every detail is recreated here to exacting standards, thanks to a superb finish and quality construction, something that any enthusiast will appreciate.
