The B-25 Mitchell is the only U.S. military aircraft to be named for a specific person, in this case General Billy Mitchell, a pioneer of military aviation. The B-25 was a prolific World War II medium bomber, with nearly 10,000 units built, suitable for both strategic bombing and tactical support. The B-25 was also the aircraft of choice for the famous Doolittle Raid, during which sixteen bombers launched from the carrier USS Hornet, bombed targets in Japan, and landed in China. The raid was launched as an immediate retaliation to the attack on Pearl Harbor, and while it was not particularly damaging to Japan, it was a tremendous and much-needed morale boost for the American people.
This particular model is signed by Richard Cole, Jimmy Doolittle's co-pilot in the #1 aircraft during the Doolittle Raid, giving the model a famous touch that any historical enthusiast will prize.
