B-1B Lancer

A product of the Cold War, the B-1 Lancer bomber first entered service more than 20 years after it was first envisioned due to fluctuations in American strategic doctrine. The B-1 is America's primary supersonic bomber, and one of a handful of large supersonic aircraft in the world. It has a variable-sweep wing design, and with the retirement of the F-14 in 2006, it is the only variable-sweep aircraft operational in the American military. The B-1 holds several speed and agility records for its weight class, and there are no immediate plans to replace it. As of 2004, 67 aircraft of the current version, B-1B, were in use, and the bomber has seen service during the Kosovo, Afghanistan, and 2003 Iraq conflicts.
